The past few weeks have been wonderful. We have been focusing on physical self care and I have grown so much as a person and feel more comfortable in my skin. I have better eating, sleeping and exercise habits. My skincare routine is on point. My nails are thriving. I have more energy. Now that I have taken care of myself physically, one step at a time, it is time to move onto the bigger stuff. The things that are not so easy to control... my mind.
Mental self care is such a complicated subject intertwined with environmental, emotional, and physical factors. Even now as I have been focusing on my physical health, I can see my mental health improving naturally.
Furthermore, sometimes to be at peace in our mind we have to get our emotions in check. But sometimes to be at peace with our emotions we have to get our thoughts in check.
So what's easier, positively changing our thoughts or our emotions? I have thought about this question for days and have decided that thoughts are easier to change than emotions. So we are going to tackle thoughts first.
As I was doing research, I realized there's not a whole lot of information out there for psychological self-care. I mean there is a lot, but it's not organized into a system that we can follow. So that's what I'm going to try, as I experiment on myself.
So what is the first thing to do to get a clear head and have positive thoughts? As someone who struggles with anxiety and depression, this question is like digging a complex underground tunnel with many different rooms.
I thought about what has helped me feel good in the past. I thought about setting goals, having good time management, hard work, helping others. This all brings me a lot of joy. Then I thought of the fruitages of the spirit, which are qualities that contribute to being a good person. Then I finally came up with a mental self-care outline. In this article, I will foreword what this next season will include. I can't wait to get started.
Clear Space Clear Thoughts I know home organization is a form of environmental self care, which is going to be the topic of season 4, but I had to implement a bit of changing my space in order to change my mental well-being. I remember as a child, I used to LOVE cleaning my room and enjoying the after effects of having everything be in its place and smelling good. But now that I'm an adult with a job and a husband and responsibilities, it is much harder to find the time to organize everything. So the first project is to pick one room at a time and go through everything Marie Kondo style. Sometimes if a room is too intimidating, I just go through a part of the room, for example the desk in my office. I'm not going to go into this too deeply because I am just doing light organization this week and will do a much deeper and thorough segment in season 4. Basically, having an organized space helps my mind feel organized. Working in a tidy space also brings me so much joy and positivity.
Track Progress We all know that journaling is great for mental health, but how many of us actually do it? This is going to be one of my huge factors in self care, documenting everything on paper. Having daily, weekly, and monthly goals. Writing down my frustrations so that they are out of my head and then I can just close the book and be done with it. Writing down what I'm thankful for. Reflecting on my behavior of the day. I will be journaling every day for 60 days and see if I make any progress on my mental health. (I know I will.)
Love One would see this word "love" and would think it's an emotional quality right? Yes, it is. But in order to display this quality in your heart, don't you need to first think about it in your head? So as part of a mental self care series, I will think about the different forms of love and give myself goals on how to portray this quality.
Joy Joy is the source of fun. Sometimes when we are down, we are just lacking joy. How can one snag that joy when they feel depressed? I will tackle this question in the future.
Peace Inner peace is something that people with anxiety always strive for. Inner peace is a beautiful thing when it is accomplished. It is feeling content, calm and relaxed. I can't wait to tackle this topic.
Patience "being impatient is just part of my personality." This may be true for some of us, but it is a skill that can be trained. How can I become a more patient person? What things should I tell myself in order to practice and cultivate this quality? In the next few weeks we will dig in and find out.
Kindness Of course it's great to be a kind person, but when do you draw the line? Is there a way to be kind to everyone and also stand up for yourself to avoid being a doormat? When someone is unkind to me, what should I tell myself to not retaliate? Can I be more empathetic towards people?
Goodness What does it mean to be good? How can I think good thoughts?
Faith I don't want to get preachy on here, but I will talk about faith, what it is, the good it brings, how to strengthen it, and why it's important. I will also work on my faith in various ways and share my progress.
Mildness You know the mild hot sauce packet at taco bell? Everyone can handle it. It's delicious. Even though some of us love the spicy packet, not all of us can handle that intensity all the time. I want to be like that mild packet and put flavor into everyone's life. How? We will find out.
Self-Control I think there is a reason why this quality is listed last. It is the hardest one to accomplish. Self-control is not only about actions, it is also about what goes on in one's head. This quality is something I always fantasize about being amazing at. I will find methods on how to improve my self-control, even in the little things.
The qualities listed above are those that a perfect person would have, in my opinion. We may already acquire all of these qualities to a certain degree. But can we improve? Absolutely. Even though I am a perfectionist by nature, and I have worked very hard to throw those perfectionist tendencies out the window, that doesn't mean that I shouldn't still work on myself. Happiness depends on your attitude and thoughts, not on your circumstances. So let's strive to be happy together and continue to make progress! Welcome to season 2 of self-care! Here's to sculpting our thoughts.
